Stems: Stems profusely branched.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, opposite, or verticillate. Margins entire. Sessile. Stipules absent or rudimentary and membranous.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, solitary or in cymes. Flowers small, bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic; pedicels long, filiform. Calyx of 5 sepals, persistent, margins scarious. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 3–5, rarely more; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2–5-carpellate, 3-celled, placentation axile; ovules anatropous.

Fruit: Capsules loculicidal; ovoid to ellipsoid; thin–walled. Seeds numerous; true endosperm absent.
